The Department of Physics at the Faculty of Science of the University of Helsinki invites applications for a PROFESSOR OR ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS PHYSICS.
The position will be based in the Accelerator Laboratory of the Department of Physics. The aim of the position is to utilize and further develop the methods for modification and characterization of materials by using the ion beam facilities available at the Accelerator Laboratory.
The Laboratory infrastructure provides excellent opportunities for further outstanding research in experimental materials physics and nanoscience. The facilities include a recently upgraded 5 MV tandem accelerator, a 500 kV accelerator/ion implanter, two slow positron beams, and a gas condensation nanocluster deposition setup. Associated analysis methods include PIXE, ERDA, RBS, AMS, PALS and DBS. Sample preparation chambers are available for, e.g., e-beam evaporation and sputtering. Experiments can be performed at cryogenic temperatures down to the mK regime. Further in-house characterization capabilities include SIMS, AFM, and XPS.
Extensive experimental and computational activities at the Faculty of Science offer interesting collaboration possibilities for the position. The experimental activities include physics of positron annihilation, X-ray spectroscopy, electronics, atomic layer deposition, isotope chronology, and cyclotron-based radionuclide production. The computational activities include simulations of broad range of materials including radiation physics and biophysics effects. The Department of Physics also has very strong ties with international large-scale big science facilities such as CERN, ITER/EUROFusion, GSI/FAIR, ESRF, and ESS.
To be successful in the position, the candidate must have a background in the research based on application of ion beams for modification or analysis of materials on an internationally high level. Experience in using complementary materials characterization and modification techniques is considered a merit. The candidate must also have a strong network of international collaboration. The academic portfolio should include a research statement of how the applicant plans to use and develop the ion beam facilities and utilize the local and international collaboration opportunities.
In addition, the appointee must make use of national and international research funding opportunities, participate in doctoral education at the Department, and promote the interaction between science and society. The teaching area of the position is physics. The person to be chosen for the position is expected to develop the teaching within the physics curriculum, especially in the areas of experimental and materials physics and nanoscience

A professor will carry out and supervise scientific research, provide teaching based on it, follow developments in research and participate in societal interaction in his/her field and in international cooperation.
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, a professor must hold a doctoral degree and have high-level academic qualifications and experience in heading scientific research. The professor must also be able to provide research-based teaching of high quality, supervise dissertations and theses as well as evidence of international cooperation in the field.
An assistant/associate professor must hold a doctoral degree and have demonstrated ability for independent scientific work as well as teaching skills required by the position. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to have competence and motivation for scientific career proven by scientific publications and other academic activities.
When assessing the qualifications of each candidate, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching materials, other teaching merits, and, if deemed necessary, teaching skills as demonstrated in a lecture as well as participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, attention will be paid to the applicant’s activities within the research community, success in obtaining research funding, research work abroad and elected positions in international organisations.
