The Center for Synaptic Neuroscience and Technology at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Genova is opening a Postdoc position under the supervision of Prof. Fabio Benfenati. The ideal candidate should have had prior experience at the postdoctoral level.
The research program will investigate the cellular and network mechanisms underlying neurological manifestations in brain diseases such as epilepsy and autism spectrum disorders. These two neurodevelopmental disorders appear with high rate of co-occurrence, suggesting the possibility of a common genetic basis for both diseases. Hyperexcitability and network instability may represent a common feature. We have characterized various genetic murine models of epilepsy and autism, by identifying the presence of pathological behaviors and excitation/inhibition imbalance. Aims of the Research Line are to define the brain circuits involved in the generation of specific behavioral phenotypes by using conditional knockout models of synapsins, PRRT2 and DEPDC5 genes, to clarify the physiopathology affecting these networks at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional level and hypothesize novel therapeutic strategies involving modulation of transcriptional/translational processes.
The successful applicant should have a PhD in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or similar, a previous postdoctoral experience, with an in-depth expertise in neuronal cell and molecular biology, gene editing and generation of targeted viral vectors. Experience in stereotaxic injections and optogenetics will be considered a plus.
