This research position involves developing artificial intelligence capable of controlling an industrial robot to detect and grasp objects autonomously.
In today’s fast-paced industrial environment, a specific system has to be configured and implemented for each new object to be grasped. The cost of development of such systems can be substantial and rarely affordable in the case of small production series/runs. We are thus launching a project that could make robotic systems more accessible, by providing an automated solution, as general as possible, to the problem of detecting and picking up a wide variety of different objects. For this project, named INTEGRIA, we are thus looking for researchers to work on the development of a robotic grasping solution using among others (deep) reinforcement learning techniques.
Candidates will ideally be software engineers, PhD candidates, or post-doctoral researchers with an interest in robotics and a strong background in programming, machine learning, reinforcement learning and/or (adaptive) control theory. Experience with simulators, physics engines and 3-D modelling is also beneficial.
Finally, candidates should enjoy working as part of a team and understand the benefits of the term “team spirit”.
The research project will be carried out at the University of Liège within a team of four engineers under the supervision of Prof. Louis Wehenkel and Prof. Damien Ernst.
The initial contract will be for a period of one year, with the possibility of an additional two-year extension. There is a possibility that the research results will be commercialized afterwards, with all the job opportunities that come with. The position is also compatible with our PhD programme and may lead to the defence of a PhD thesis within three to four years. The starting date is open to negotiation, but we expect to hire a new researcher as soon as possible.
Please send your full CV to Prof. Damien Ernst at the following email address: email@example.com and insert the following email subject header: INTEGRIA APPLICATION.
