Bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics, artificial intelligence and engineering to analyse and interpret biological data. Bioinformatics is crucial for the analysis of data from projects sequencing different species' genome, transcriptome (which genes are active and how active they are) and proteome (from RNA to protein). In bioinformatics, more and more complicated studies are being performed that generate large amounts of data (Big Data). Big Data and network analysis are necessary when studying, for example, different types of microbiome (all microorganisms in a certain environment).
Other important parts of bioinformatics are the development and management of databases that are made available to researchers through national and international infrastructures and projects. These researchers can work with domestic animals, wildlife forests, plants and microorganisms in many different research fields.
Bioinformaticians work on organizing, structuring, storing and analysing large amounts of data that are currently produced by “High Throughput” technologies (NGS, Big Data, proteomics, metabolomics). Bioinformaticians analyses and organizes information from projects involving viruses, bacteria, nematodes, plants, wildlife, domestic animals and human genetics.
The position includes teaching of bioinformatics at the basic and advanced level and research in the field of bioinformatics. Teaching includes course management, educational development, theoretical and practical teaching and examination. One of the most important tasks for the senior lecturer will be the development of SLU's new "Master's Program in Bioinformatics for Natural Resources". The master's program will be in English but many courses at basic level are given in Swedish and the university lecturer is expected to be able to work in Swedish within four years of employment.
The university lecturer will also contribute to the development of the subject bioinformatics. This includes own research in bioinformatics in areas relevant to the VH-faculty and also SLU, and supervision of post graduate students.
Assignments and administrative work at departmental and faculty level will be included. The senior lecturer will also be involved in SLU's Bioinformatics Infrastructure (SLUBI) and the National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS).

Assessment for the appointment will be mainly based on the degree to which the candidate possesses the skills to qualify for the position. Equal care shall be given to the assessment of pedagogic skills and scientific skills.
