Postdoctoral Researcher, Toxicology of Lipophilic Compounds in the Zebrafish Embryo

University of Antwerp

Antwerp, Belgium

Zebrafishlab (Department of Veterinary Sciences, Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences) and SPHERE (Department of Biology, Faculty of Science) are seeking to fill a full-time (100%) vacancy Postdoctoral researcher (with a subsidy), Toxicology of lipophilic compounds in the zebrafish embryo.

This research project will investigate non-specific toxicity that is caused by the lipophilic nature of environmental pollutants, including the development of new approaches to distinguish non-specific (baseline) toxicity from specific toxicity pathways (e.g., endocrine disruption) and to identify the critical drivers of toxicity. A combination of different approaches can be applied to reach the goal of the project (e.g., experimental, data-mining, modelling, etc.). The overall focus can therefore to some extent be adapted to match the skills and interests of the ideal candidate.

Job description

  • You conduct a research project in the field of ecotoxicology, investigating the biological effects of lipophilic environmental pollutants in the zebrafish embryo.
  • You publish your research results in scientific journals, and present your work at international conferences. At least one accepted publication per year is expected as the minimum scientific output.
  • You contribute to the daily operations of the lab (e.g. fish maintenance), and to a limited extent to other ongoing projects of the research group (e.g. assisting PhD students and other team members).

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a doctoral degree in one of the life sciences, preferably in Biology, Biomedical Sciences or Biochemistry;
  • You are an experienced aquatic ecotoxicologist and are familiar with the concepts of non-specific versus specific toxicity. Experience in working with zebrafish as a model organism is strongly recommended;
  • You are fluent in both spoken and written English;
  • You obtained a certificate of Laboratory Animal Science (category B or C), or are willing to do so as soon as possible;
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
