We are seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to work three years in the project ”Methane and soil - tree networks: Adding dimensions to greenhouse-gas studies (METNET)”, funded by the Academy of Finland.
In the project we will develop an innovative method for computing methane production, consumption and transport by combining cutting-edge X-ray tomography, network science and simulation techniques. Three-dimensional pore systems of tropical, temperate and boreal peats and methane conducting tree tissues will be imaged using X-ray tomography and used to create networks of interconnected pipes. Process-based methane computation will be done in this domain. Controlled laboratory manipulation experiments and field experiments are used in developing and validating the simulation model.
The hired Postdoctoral Researcher will be responsible of the development of the simulation model and for the related simulations and takes part into planning and implementation of the experimental work. We will do close collaboration with the University of Helsinki, and universities from UK and Singapore - research visits and field work trips to these places are possible. 5 % of the work time is allocated to teaching.
The person to be appointed as Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to hold a doctoral degree in applied physics or mathematics, engineering sciences, forest or environmental sciences or other suitable disciplines. The doctoral degree may not be from more than five years ago at the time when the position starts. In this context, the five years refer to a net period of time, which does not include maternity leaves, parental leaves, or military service, etc.
Experience on some of the following fields is considered as an advantage: mathematical modelling of processes in nature, processing of three-dimensional images, applications of network science, greenhouse gas studies and publishing in scientific journals.
Good skills in spoken and written English is required. English may be used as the language of instruction and supervision in this position.
