Research Professor, Modelling and Simulation of Cyber-Physical Systems

Research Professor, Modelling and Simulation of Cyber-Physical Systems

University of Antwerp

Antwerp, Belgium

As part of its dynamic research policy and supported by the possibilities offered by the Flemish Government through the resources of the Special Research Fund (BOF), the Faculty of Science is seeking to fill a full-time vacancy in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science for a full-time Tenure track research professor (TTZAPBOF) in the area of Modelling and Simulation of Cyber-Physical Systems

Both in research and in teaching, the department focuses on three areas: Data Science, Telecommunication and Distributed Systems, and Software Engineering. Complementary to these three areas, research is also conducted in Computational Mathematics.

The position is within the Sofware Engineering area, in particular, in the Antwerp Systems and software Modelling (AnSyMo) group. Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are the main research focus of AnSyMo. CPS emerge from the networking of multi-physical (mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, biochemical, ….) and computational (control, signal processing, logical inference, planning, …) processes, often interacting with a highly uncertain environment, including human actors, in a socio-economic context. Software plays a pivotal role, both as a component in a CPS and in the construction of “enabling” modelling and simulation tools. AnSyMo is a research “core lab” of Flanders Make, the strategic research centre for the Flemish manufacturing industry, working on the foundations of “Industry 4.0”.

The three research pillars in AnSyMo are Formal Methods (Prof. dr. Guillermo Perez), Testing and Reverse and Re-engineering of Software and more broadly Empirical Software Engineering (Prof. dr. Serge Demeyer) and Multi-Paradigm Modelling and Simulation (Prof. dr. Hans Vangheluwe).

Job description

  • The assignment consists of lecturing duties, scientific research and academic service to society. During a period, limited to five years (duration of the temporary appointment in tenure track), scientific research will be the main activity;
  • In the Computer Science Bachelor and Masters programmes at the University of Antwerp, Teaching and Research are tightly interwoven;
  • You will conduct world-class scientific research in the area of Modelling and Simulation of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). The focus of this research will be on enabling software methods, techniques and tools for the optimal modelling and simulation-based design of CPS;
  • You will acquire and manage external funding (national and international), for both fundamental and applied research;
  • You will participate in the AnSyMo research activities (in collaboration with the Constrained Systems Lab in the Technical Engineering faculty) within Flanders Make;
  • You will offer scientific services: among others you will supervise Masters (in our research-intensive Masters programme) and PhD students;
  • You will strengthen the relationships between the department of Mathematics and Computer Science on the one hand, and commercial companies and other external organizations on the other hand;
  • You will be assigned limited lecturing duties of courses such as Computer Systems and Architecture (the only hardware course in our Bachelor programme), Model Driven Engineering, Software Design and Architecture, and Modelling and Simulation of Software-Intensive Systems.
  • You will provide service within the organizational structure of the department, faculty and university. Examples are serving on committees such as the Education Committee and the Department Council, or to coordinate Erasmus exchange.

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a doctorate degree (PhD) in Computer Science or Computer Engineering (or equivalent);
  • You have a minimum of 2 years experience at Postdoctoral level at the closing date of the vacancy;
  • You have experience in the domain of foundations of Modelling (e.g., model management, model transformation, model and modelling language evolution, modelling language engineering, …) and Simulation (such as multi-formalism/hybrid simulation and co-simulation). Given the Software Engineering context of this position, a background in Software Architecture and Software Design is necessary. Experience with applications to Cyber-Physical Systems is an advantage;
  • You display research excellence in the field of Modelling and Simulation is demonstrated by highly cited scientific publications, international cooperation, participation and organization of conferences and workshops, etc.;
  • You have an international academic CV and perform qualitatively outstanding academic research;
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy;
  • Experience with research valorisation (e.g., industrial research projects, spin-off companies, patents, …) is an advantage;
  • A proven track record of acquiring research funds, for both fundamental and applied research, the latter preferably with industrial partners, is an advantage;
  • The focus in your teaching corresponds to the educational vision of the university;
  • You have leadership skills (or the potential to develop them);
  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative;
  • As soon as you take on teaching duties as a course unit coordinator, you are able to demonstrate that you master the language of instruction at the CEFR level C1. As a course unit coordinator, you also master the language of administration, Dutch, or you are willing to gradually learn the language up to the CEFR level B2. The University of Antwerp supports international staff members by offering them an integration programme and provides adequate language tracks for course unit coordinators within the framework of the Flemish statutory language regulations.
