Engineer, Physicist or Similar

DLR - German Aerospace Center

Göttingen, Germany

Your mission:

In cruise flight, passengers may be exposed to considerable noise. But how does the noise get from the source to the passenger? In two ways. Airborne sound radiates from a source of noise, such as the jet engines, and is perceived by passengers in the cabin. In addition, engine vibrations spread through the aircraft structure reaching the cabin. Similar to loudspeakers, the vibrating surfaces of the cabin in turn emit airborne sound, which is perceived by passengers as noise.

In the Department of Structural Dynamics and System Identification of the Institute of Aeroelasticity, DLR addresses the issue of structure-borne cabin noise.

Your tasks:

  • familiarization with existing experimental and simulation analysis methods for structural vibrations and structure-borne noise in the acoustic frequency range;
  • structural dynamic modeling of aircraft fuselages and cabins with Finite Element methods in the higher frequency range;
  • comparison of numerical models with measured data;
  • development of methods for automatic model updating;
  • development of new methods for the analysis and comparison of structure-borne noise and transfer paths from simulation and measurement data;
  • preparation of project reports and scientific publications;
  • presentation of results to clients as well as in conferences.

Your qualifications:

  • completed university studies in engineering sciences (Mechanical, acoustics or similar) or physics with knowledge in the field of mechanics or acoustics (M.Sc./M.Eng./Diplom);
  • good knowledge of Finite Element Methods (FEM) in the area of dynamic analysis preferably with MSC NASTRAN or ANSYS;
  • good knowledge in the field of structural dynamics;
  • strong coding experience in Matlab;
  • experience in coupled analysis (fluid-structure) in COMSOL Multiphysics;
  • experience in vibration measurements and signal processing;
  • highly proficient in written and spoken English.
