Daido Metal Co. Ltd. European Technical Centre (UK), based in Ilminster, Somerset, undertakes research and development activities relating to materials and production processes for plain bearings, bushings and thrust bearings. Permanent or Temporary: Permanent position.
Hours of work: 8.00am – 4.30pm, Monday to Thursday, 8.00am – 1.20pm Friday. 37.50 hours/week. Additional hours, including some weekend working or travel may be required to fully meet the responsibilities of this position.
Location: Our principal location is based at Ilminster, Somerset.
Pay range: £28k-£37k depends on qualification, skill and experiences. Pay frequency is on a monthly basis.

Core purpose of job role:

To manage electrochemical/materials related R&D development projects and contributes to the achievement of R&D department targets.

Key tasks & Responsibilities:

  • To set up, carry out and evaluate electrochemical-based development projects to develop high performance materials for internal combustion engine applications (TRL1-3);
  • To implement new technology and R&D process into manufacturing practice including initial prototype development, customer test piece preparation and mass production support (TRL 4-6);
  • To generate written research reports on regular basis for distribution throughout the organization, including presenting data at regular meetings with colleagues in Japan and UK;
  • To provide technical support to Application Engineering (AE) division on customer issues;
  • To engage into external research project with UK/EU universities when required;
  • To ensure that lab resources and equipment are maintained appropriately and serviced and calibrated regularly;
  • To ensure that health, safety and environmental responsibilities are maintained.

Specific criteria required for this position:

  • Hold a degree preferably postgraduate/Ph.D degree within one of the following disciplines: Materials, Electroplating, Electrochemistry, Surface Engineering or other relevant engineering disciplines;
  • Relevant project or work experiences in the field of material research, knowledge in electrochemical based development would be advantage;
  • Familiar with modern material analytical and characterization technique, method and equipment;
  • Ability to apply both fundamental principles and creativity to the development and improvement of products and technology;
  • Able to demonstrate an analytical and methodical approach to problem solving in an industrial research environment, with the ability to accurately document experiments, results and form conclusions;
  • Familiar with environmental and health and safety aspects of working in a laboratory;
  • Excellent communication, presentation and technical report writing skills, attention to details;
  • You will be a self-motivated, well organised individual with the ability to work well in a team;
  • The ability to travel from time to time, ideally holding a full driving license.
