“Computational and Chemical Biology” Research Line is looking for an experienced PhD level Scientist to head a new small research group devoted to the design, chemical synthesis and testing of innovative nucleic acid-based drugs.

Candidates’ areas of expertise should include short and long noncoding RNAs, siRNAs and antisense oligonucleotides.

The research activities in which the scientist will be particularly involved are the use of chemical epitranscriptome modifications and the therapeutics for neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative diseases. The scientist will be also responsible for managing the operation of an oligonucleotide synthesis facility and an analytical team working on purification and quality assessment of the oligonucleotide products. The scientist will take advantage of the highly competitive environment in molecular and cellular neurobiology as well as in molecular modeling and drug design which IIT can offer.

Main responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain oligonucleotide synthesis machinery;
  • Manage and develop a small team of nucleic acid scientists and RA’s;
  • Assist in the development of new technology for the synthesis and application of oligonucleotides and other nucleic acid reagents;
  • Perform advanced data analysis as well as trouble-shooting under minimal supervision;
  • Communicate and report study findings at meetings;
  • Work cooperatively with an advisory team to optimize screening strategies and develop functional assays;
  • Contribute to group goals and objectives with new ideas and creative approaches.

Requirements:

  • This position requires a PhD in Chemistry, Biology and related disciplines, at least two years of postdoctoral experience, and at least three additional years of relevant experience;
  • A strong knowledge of nucleic acid biochemistry;
  • Experience with chemical synthesis of nucleic acids is highly desirable;
  • A high level of understanding of cellular and molecular biology and biochemistry experimental techniques;
  • Ability to work independently but also to be a productive and cooperative member of a diverse research team;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects;
  • Prior experience in managing research groups is desirable;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
