The department “Dynamics at Surfaces” (Prof. Dr. Alec M. Wodtke) at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen is looking to appoint a Group Leader.
The aim of the department is to gain a detailed understanding of the elementary processes relevant to surface chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis. Theoretical understanding of surface chemistry will eventually become a tool to design new chemical technology including: heterogeneous (photo) catalysts, photovoltaics, fuel cells etc. To reach this goal, we require advances in theories of atomic and molecular interactions at interfaces. Applying cutting-edge laser, molecular beam, and ultrahigh vacuum technology to design well-defined experiments, our dept. strives to provide benchmark measurements which set standards for the next generation of theoretical advance.
The successful candidate will build up and lead a new cooperative research group located at the Dalian Coherent Light Source and be jointly mentored by Alec M. Wodtke and Xueming Yang. A new surface science end-station will be used together with the newly commissioned free electron laser to carry out surface scattering experiments with electronically state-selected atomic beams with tunable translational energy. The group will benefit from 20 % of the DCLS beam time. It is envisioned that the group will rapidly grow to include 4 to 5 experimental PhD students and one post-doctoral scientist. Fruitful interplay with members of the dept.’s theoretical group is envisioned.
Potential candidates should hold a Ph.D. degree in chemistry, physical chemistry, physics or a related subject. Post-doctoral experience is advantageous as experience in working with high power short-pulse lasers, free electron lasers, optics, programming and vacuum technologies.
