Associate/Full Professor in Sedimentary Earth System Sciences

About the position

The cluster seeks a highly motivated senior scientist, full professor (or associate professor on a tenure track, depending upon experience) to further strengthen the research group in the field of sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleoclimate and biogeochemistry. The candidate should be an outstanding Earth System scientist with proven expertise in field-based programmes in marine and/or terrestrial settings. The successful applicant is expected to further develop a dynamic, externally-funded research programme, as well as to supervise graduate and undergraduate students. He/she should contribute to the teaching within the BSc and MSc programmes and to the management of the department. The candidate will take leadership over two tenure track positions in the field of biogeochemistry and chemo-stratigraphy as well as two technicians of the stable isotope laboratory.

Education

The senior Earth System scientist will lecture within BSc courses in the Earth Science and potentially Earth and Economics programme, as well as offering specialized courses in the master programme. He/she will offer BSc, MSc and PhD students projects in line with the research of the sedimentology group.

Tasks

The senior Sedimentary Earth System scientist will:

  • within 3 years establish an independent research group in the current department structure;
  • demonstrate leadership and guidance in securing the positions of tenure track staff;
  • successfully acquire national and international research grants;
  • supervise and coach BSc-, MSc- and PhD-students and postdocs;
  • play a key role in department’s research programme;
  • contribute in teaching in the BSc and MSc programmes;
  • plan and manage research projects and collaborations with academic, industrial and (semi-) governmental partners;
  • perform managerial tasks for the department and faculty;
  • be actively involved in local, national and international networks in his/her field.

Requirements

The senior Sedimentary Earth System scientist is expected to:

  • be an enthusiastic team player with excellent communication and management skills;
  • have a PhD in Earth Sciences or comparable fields;
  • have a strong record in the acquisition of external funds and a proven capacity to motivate and guide students on BSc, MSc and PhD level;
  • have a proven interest in sedimentology, and matching publication and citation records;
  • have an outstanding international network and proven skills in managing international collaborative research projects;
  • be able to successfully work in a multidisciplinary and innovative research field;
  • have a basic qualification in teaching for Dutch universities ('BKO'), or is willing to follow this course after appointment;
  • be fluent in English and to acquire knowledge of the Dutch language after two years.
